There probably isn’t a more beneficial and satisfying way to get rid of your old car than to donate it to a worthwhile charity. Not only is it a socially responsible method of recycling, but you will also be providing a benefit to a local non-profit organization when you donate an old car that you really don’t know how to get rid of.

To donate an old car to charity, you will first need to pick the charity or cause that you would most like to help. To get the ball rolling, you’ll then want to contact that charity by calling them or by contacting them through their website and ask if they accept old car donations. Most charities will have an 800 number listed on their website or a short contact form you can fill out. If they do accept the donation of old cars, they will generally want to get more information about the vehicle such as the make, model and year manufactured.

Be sure to check out the charity you want to donate your old car to. First, ensure that at least 75% of the proceeds of your old car donation will go directly to the cause or charity. There are a number of organizations that you could donate your old car to that are actually look-alike charities that are run for profit. These organizations will typically sell the car and pocket most of the proceeds where often only 5-10% of the vehicle’s proceeds will directly benefit the cause or charity.

When making an old car donation, you will typically need to have the vehicle’s title. In some cases, particularly where the car is more than 25 years old, the title may not be available in the state that you are donating your car in. If this is the case, then you will want to contact the charity to find out if they will accept your old car donation without a title. They will generally ask you for the model, make and year of the vehicle. Typically, the title will be needed, even if the car is no longer operational.

If the cause or charity requires a title for the car, you will need to sign it, even when you donate an old car. You’ll also have fill in the new owner section on the title with the name of the charity you are donating an old car to in order to transfer ownership of the vehicle.

In summary, to donate an old car to charity you will first need to find a cause or charity that you feel strongly about and want to help. Also, make sure that at least 75% of any proceeds made from the sale of the car go directly to the charity. Next, you will want to ensure that the charity or cause will accept a vehicle of your car’s particular make, model and year. If they do, you’ll either need to deliver the car to the charity, or in most cases, they will pick it up. Finally, you will complete the process of donating an old car by giving the charity your donation information and by signing over the title to them. That is all there is to it. It is typically a simple and straight-forward process.
